The Treatment Rooms – Emma Ballard
When Emma’s employer and mentor, Sue Shields, decided to sell her business and emigrate to Australia in 2004, Emma decided that the time was right for her to open her own beauty salon. She was 25, had eight years experience in the beauty industry behind her and had an NVQ 2/3. She had also completed three contracts on board luxury cruise liners and worked as a Senior Therapist for Sue at her Salon in Carnforth.
Emma’s market research led her to the conclusion that there was a gap in the market in Grange over Sands, so she set about looking for premises and found a shop that needed full refurbishment in the town. As the work was done, she ran a poster campaign in the window with the slogan “Guess what’s coming here in x weeks time?” (she changed it every week which gave the builders a constant reminder of their deadline!).
Emma has faced difficulties in dealing with banks and suppliers along the way because of her age and gender but her motto has always been “self-belief and determination”. Six months down the line she is already proving that she was right – she has taken on two new staff members, is about to recruit a third and the business is thriving.
